Why Solar?

Thinking about going solar but still have a few questions?

See below for a list of our most frequently asked questions.

Solar F.A.Q.

Why should we order from Sun Nerds?

Great question! Brokers shop the market and let solar companies compete for the business.  By putting your job out to bid, we do the shopping for you.  This means the best product, installation, warranty and price combination.  Sun Nerds grew 400% in 2018 and is a national company.

Does Sun Nerds sell the solar roof-panels?

At this time, we don’t.  To date, the few companies selling roof panels have had big issues.  The biggest supplier has had up to 70% failure rate with delamination.  There are many wires and connections as well.  Finally, the price is outrageous.  This will be the future, but Sun Nerds feels it is not good value today.

What Changes are coming with the Connecticut utilities?

Basically, higher rates!  Over the last 15 years, the Connecticut rates have escalated an average of about 4% per year.  Sun Nerds uses that projection in estimating how much energy will cost the next 25 years.  On January 1st, Eversource electricity rates increased 19.4% and United Illuminating increased 24%!  However, where the utilities profit is in their delivery charges which are almost always more than the electricity charge itself.  Utility customers can select a third-party electricity supplier, but there is no option on the delivery.  By the way, Connecticut has the highest electricity rates in continental United States!

Our credit card bills are coming in now from Christmas and we just paid our property tax. Wouldn’t later be better to buy solar?

Perhaps!  Every family is unique.  Some will just write a check, but most sign up with us when we can combine a monthly solar payment with the new lower cost for electricity and that total comes in close to the average utility payment without solar.

What are my finance options?

Sun Nerds shops for you.  The most common loan is an unsecured-20-year loan with zero down.  Home owners would need a 660 -credit score to qualify.  “Unsecured” means your home would not be collateral.  Homeowners could also search for a “home-equity” loan which would use your home as collateral.  The benefit would be tax-deductible interest!

Can we prepay to save on interest?

Yes!

In the last six years, panels are twice as strong and half as costly! Wouldn’t we be better off waiting for more technological advancements?

Yes and no!  The future will bring better technology.  However, “soft cost” like labor are still on the rise.  Also, there is uncertainty concerning import tariffs.  The vast majority of even American made panels, are imported components. The biggest change for Connecticut customers will be the government help via rebates and credits. “Smart money” suggests buying now with the rebate and credit, will be the wiser choice!

Is there a “cash discount?”

Yes!  Included would be customer-originated equity loans!

Is this rebate and credit going away?

Yes!  The Connecticut “Greenbank” rebate comes right off the price.  It usually is somewhere in the 10% to 14% range.  The money will be exhausted sometime in 2019 and not replaced.  The “investment-tax-credit” from the IRS, will be reduced from 30% to 26% in 2020, then 22% in 2021 and zero in 2022.  Sun Nerds encourages home owners to act now for the maximum!

What about the way the panels look on a home?

That has been a concern from the beginning.  Older panels had some colors like blue or purple that many did not like.  The new look can be all-black if you like.  Layouts will be presented and must be approved by the home owner.  Sun Nerds will adhere to setback minimums which means panels will not be “overhanging” peaks, edges and eaves.

Do panels need to be cleaned?

Cleaning might help some however, most don’t go up on the roof.  The rain will generally clear dust and debris.

What about snow?

Usually, snow slides off and/or melts within a few days.  Solar homes always will be the first in the neighborhood to be free of snow.

When covered in snow, will electricity be produced?

Only with a thin coating.  Also, nothing from street lights or the moon!

What about home resale value?

Great question!  Value is in the eyes of the buyer.  The prudent solar home owner will keep a spread-sheet comparing pre-solar to post-solar utility bills.  According to an article in Consumer Reports, the second most-important criteria for modern home shoppers, is “energy efficiency.”  Solar will save 10s of thousands of dollars!

What about trees shading our home?

They will lower solar production!  Homeowners have a choice to remove or trim trees.

Do panels always go on the roof?

Usually.  Sometimes, there might be an option of a “ground-mount” array in the yard.  Its advantage would be the perfect angle and direction towards the southern sky.  Its disadvantage would be more costs to install.

Can installation be done in all 12 months?

Yes!

What about our roof? Don’t you have to puncture it for the brackets?

Yes.  There is a mechanical seal and a warranty from 10 to 25 years with most companies.

How long would it take for installation?

Generally, about three months to go thru the process of design, permit applications and payments, inspections and site visits.  Installation time is usually two days.  If for some reason a public hearing is needed, Sun Nerds will represent our client.

When power is out, will our panels produce electricity?

No.  This is because the utility might be working on the line and they don’t want live electricity.  There is an option of a battery-back-up.

Our roof is old. Do we have to replace it first?

Sometimes.  There will be a “site-visit” to inspect your roof as well as your support in the attic and your electrical system as well.  Sun Nerds will suggest necessary repairs needed at once.  If repairs are needed, home owners can benefit from doing the repair and solar installation under one loan.  Check with your accountant as to the investment-tax-credit.

Will the panels elongate our roof life?

It should because there will be shade on the roof where there was previously sun.  Also, there will be protection from snow and ice.
